Channels & Daphne updates

Point releases for both Channels and Daphne this week.

Channels 3.0.2 fixed an issue with the runworker background-task command. (There was a matching asgiref bump to go with this.)

Daphne 3.0.1 fixed an issue cleaning cancelled tasks on Python 3.8+.

This looks to mark the dust-settled point from the Channels 3 update. Plan now is just gentle maintenance, at least until after the Django 3.2 feature freeze in January, and then we’ll see where we go from there.

What do you say to teenagers about programming?

Next on my list for the end of the year was to pull together my various thoughts on contributing, particularly in the Django ecosystem, but more widely too. I started turning my mind to that this week.

Focusing said mind somewhat, I’ve signed up to do a Q&A session with class of students at the EEMI — the école européenne des métiers de l' Internet, the school of the web, in Paris.

This is deeply nerve-wracking. What does one say to a group of Parisian[^1] teenagers about programming? Current bullet points are running along the lines of:

• Yes, it’s hard.
• But it’s also fun, rewarding, stimulating.
• As a career it’s secure, well remunerated, and there’s no heavy-lifting.
• But you don’t need to be a professional programmer. In this day and age, it’s a transferable skill to pretty much anything you want to do, akin to writing.

It’s only a short event, so if I get any of those points across, whilst explaining a bit about open source, and Django, and freelancing, and who knows what, it’ll be fine.

Still nervous mind. Like conference talks, it’ll be much better once it’s over.

[^1]: I'm both English and a philosophy graduate, so whilst of course that doesn’t matter, teenagers being teenagers the world-over, it oh so does. We can drink coffee and discuss exactly how and why some other time.
