Weeknotes 2020 WK 35

Mini-break

I was going to take the week off this week, but with Django 3.1 just out, folks are starting to play with the new async views and middleware. This meant a couple of issues just to look at.

I’m quite sure Mariusz would have handled them but he was plenty busy with other issues for Django 3.1.1, which is due on Sept 1. As such I did just a little bit on these issues and it was more of a mini-break than a total holiday.

None the less, much refreshed.

DjangoCon EU Talk

Which is good really: I needed much energy to sit down to my talk for DjangoCon Europe later in the month.

These things always take much more than I think, or plan, or assume. The experience for me is one of slow-brewing. The CFP was some months back now, so it’s been on the back-burner of a long time. There it sits, fermenting, until it’s time to pull it together properly.

That’s now.

It’s coming on nicely. Looking to record in the week coming up.

I’m not at all sure I’m keen on the remote video format.

I don’t think I could commit to more than one talk this year.

Channels update

The channels update is coming on. I made progress this week on making the runserver command pick up the Django ASGI application for Django 3.0+, whilst falling back to the channels version if you’re still on Django 2.2.

Once that’s working properly it’ll just be the docs to go and we should be there for a release.

Given that I’m focusing on my talk this week, I’m looking at mid-Sept for the channels update. It would be good to have it done for DjangoCon Europe (although that’s a bit arbitrary).

End of Summer

A storm came in yesterday. The temperature dropped 10°C. It’ll come back, but that’s the end of the real heat. Thoughts turn to autumn, and the end of the year.

I can safely say, no grand plans. The theme of 2020 is survival. Keep ticking-over. Knock off a few little items if we can. Re-group for next year. (I’d add Vote but I’m not American.) That’s plenty.
